Living In the Shadow of the Cross

Jesus had chosen to live in the shadow of the cross of Calvary before the foundation of the world. (I Peter 1:19-21) Then He wrapped Himself in humanity in order to become "the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world". (John 1:29) Within the last year of His ministry he began to tell his disciples The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the Law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life." (Luke 9:22) As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. (Luke 9:5 1) I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem. (Luke 13:33) The cross became more focused for him as he told his disciples The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10), Finally our Lord arrived in Jerusalem with his disciples at Passover. On Palm Sunday He was rejected by the spiritual leaders as their long awaited Messiah and King. At that point the shadow of the cross was but a mere five days from becoming a cruel reality.

Living in the Shadow of the Cross is a study taken from the Gospel of Luke. Dr. Luke recorded the last week of Jesus life as He celebrated His last Passover with His disciples. This study will give us many encouraging spiritual insights about our commitment to continue to take up our cross daily and follow our Lord and savior Jesus Christ until He comes again.
