Jesus
Lord of His Church

John, the last living apostle, had been sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey (94-95 AD) when he was arrested by the Roman government and paced in their penal colony on the island of Patmos. While working in the quarries, his beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ appeared to him in all His majesty and power for the first time in some sixty years. At that time, the Sovereign Lord of the Church instructed the aged apostle to write seven letters to the seven churches on the western coast of Turkey: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. Those love letters from a husband to His bride were filled with words of encouragement, correction, exhortation, and promise. Those seven churches were a symbol of completeness, enabling the Lord Jesus to say everything he needed to say to every church and every individual believer in every generation until he comes again in power and glory.

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
Revelation 1:1-3:22

The Seven Churches of Revelation

On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea." -- The Apostle John, Revelation 1:10-11
