Paul's wonderful letter to the Colossians contains encouragement, warning and a beautiful description of Christ's pre-eminence in all things. In the Christian life both individuals and communities of faith can become distracted with the fads and facades that accompany faith and seek our attention. Basically, they all have at their core the same error—a subtle substitution of who Christ is, or what he does to bring us into and keep us in a relationship with God. Through encouraging words and personal reports, Paul encourages the Colossian church not to be distracted by things that are added to Christ and his work on the cross. The religious shenanigans offered to the Colossians come to us insimilar forms. “Don't touch that” and “don't taste that!” This is external activity seeking to change internal problems. Such activities “lack any value in retraining sensual indulgence” (2.23c).
We are rather, as we focus on Christ our clear direction, to live from the resources that God has given us in Christ. The power of the Spirit enabling us to live as “God's chosen people.” We're not to walk in the ways we once walked, nor are we to fix our condition through religious activity. We are to trust Christ in whom all the “fullness of the Deity live.” As we trust him, and as we celebrate him in community we have peace that transforms not only our lives but also our relationships. Then when Christ appears again, we'll appear with him because he is our life and the life of our community. When we focus on anything other than Christ, we will not find life but more likely “false humility.” The first thing is a clear direction. Christ is that clear direction. Once established and empowered by God's Spirit, the rest falls into place. “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him...”
